Description

This course is one-credit pass/fail seminar taken in conjunction with a field placement in a non-profit organization, government agency, court or private law firm handling pro bono matters exclusively. In this seminar, students will have the opportunity not only to reflect thoughtfully on the dynamics of their externship experiences but also to explore in-depth the meaning of being a lawyer and to reflect on effective career development strategies. Among other topics, we will explore the variety of roles that lawyers may have and the wide range of experiences available to persons with law degrees. We will discuss ethical obligations and other unique responsibilities that come with having specialized legal skills. We will reflect on challenges faced in the workplace and discuss in detail some skills that are necessary to succeed in today’s legal world, including effective communication, use of technology, teamwork, networking, and management skills. And we will think about how to create your own career path and how to be professionally fulfilled while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The diversity of your field placements will guarantee us some healthy and informative discussions!
