The time/place of this extra meeting is determined by the professor. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.

Description

This seminar is designed to help students succeed in their externship and legal career. Classes will include an examination of different types of legal practice, including government, non-profit, and non-traditional legal jobs. This course will emphasize practical skills necessary to succeed as a lawyer, with a particular focus on presentation skills and writing. The seminar will also address topics such as ethical issues faced by externs and lawyers, diversity and bias issues in lawyering, and networking strategies. The class will include guest speakers from various areas of legal practice and will provide students with the opportunity to practice presentation skills as well as to role-play hypothetical situations that may arise during externships. PLEASE NOTE: THE FIRST CLASS WILL BE HELD AS SCHEDULED ON TUESDAY, MAY 28. THE JUNE 4 CLASS IS CANCELLED DUE TO INSTRUCTOR'S BUSINESS TRAVEL. A MAKEUP CLASS WILL BE SCHEDULED. This is a three-credit graded course. It is taken concurrently with a field placement in a non-profit or governmental organization, or a private law firm handling pro bono matters exclusively.
