Description
The history and a contemporary interpretation of this amendment. Completes a survey of basic constitutional law begun in LAW-503.
The course surveys the First Amendment as it protects freedom of expression and freedom of religion. The reading and discussion will focus primarily on freedom of speech and the many contexts in which it arises, very briefly on freedom of the press, and finally on the protection for religion that is provided by the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause.
