Description
A wrongful conviction – the conviction of an innocent man or woman represents the ultimate failure of a criminal justice system. While this course will discuss remedies for wrongful convictions, its primary focus is on examining the causes of wrongful convictions and, equally importantly, to examine possible measures to prevent or remedy them. In a seminar format, we will first discuss the various factors which have been shown to contribute to wrongful convictions and then discuss ways in which we can detect and reduce the impact of these factors.

Required Texts:
1. James Dwyer, Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld; Actual Innocence. (paperback). You will not need the book until preparing for the third class. It does not matter which edition you purchase; some later additions have an additional chapter, which I recommend, but will not be part of the required reading.
2. A case list and substantial additional materials will be available online at the MyWCL portal for this class, and, I believe, from Adjunct Support if you wish to purchased them all at once. I will also provide some class and case outlines for your benefit, but they are not required reading as such. Other materials may be duplicated and/or put on line during the term.
