Description

This course explores the professional and ethical obligations of lawyers in the United States and the various systems for regulating attorneys. Topics will include bar admissions, lawyer discipline, formation of the lawyer-client relationship, confidentiality, fees, client fund management, conflicts of interest, conduct before the tribunal, advertising, and practical practice concerns for lawyers, among other issues. Our focus is on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, a version of which has been adopted in most states.

First Class Readings

(1) ABA Book - Preamble, Scope, Rule 1.0 & Comments; (2) Unit One - Copied Material - Red Dog, 625 A.2d 245; and, (3) Additional Assignment - Prepare a one paragraph summary of a recent news article or blog post regarding a legal ethics issue and be prepared to discuss the issued involved.
