Description
This course covers the constitutional foundationsýof the U.S. legal system through the history ofýthe jurisprudence of the United States SupremeýCourt. The three main areas of study will include:ý(i) the structure of the United States governmentýand separation of powers within the federalýgovernment and between the federal government andýthe states; (ii) due process and (iii) equalýprotection. We will examine the United StatesýSupreme Court's key rulings on the constitutionalýissues. We will focus on the reasoning and theýdoctrinal tests that the Court has applied inýthose rulings. The course will also focus on howýthe Court's approach to various constitutionalýissues has developed or changed over time. Beingýaware of this development is critical toýunderstanding how Supreme Court Justices applyýconstitutional rules.
