This is an advanced course in patent law. Students should have completed the prerequisite course, Patent Law, Law-688, or have had significant experience in the practice of patent law such as being registered as a patent agent or working as a patent examiner. Contact the instructor (lytle@american.edu) for permission to enter this course based on your work experience if you have not taken the prerequisite course.
Description
The Patent Prosecution course focuses on practical application of patent law concepts in preparing and prosecuting patent applications. The course examines patent statutes and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rules governing patent prosecution, as well as court decisions impacting and interpreting patents. In addition to in?class discussions, workshops, and homework assignments, students will draft a patent application and a response to an “Office Action” issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
