Description
This class will provide an introduction to the Internet policy with a focus on practical skills. While beneficial for any future lawyer, the class will be ideal for students preparing for a practice with a legislative/policy focus, whether in a law firm, in-house counsel position, public interest firm, or in government. Students will develop advocacy skills tailored to the public policy arena, including how to draft talking points, white papers, and congressional testimony and how to conduct meetings and present arguments to decision makers. With more than 20 years combined experience working on Internet policy issues at a law firm, on Capitol Hill, at public interest firms, and at an Internet company, the instructors will help students learn pragmatic techniques, including how to present complex arguments in plain English. In addition to building advocacy skills, the class will introduce students to several key substantive issues arising from the Internet economy. The Internet has revolutionized many aspects of our lives, including commerce, entertainment, education, and civic discourse. While most of this transformation has been positive, it presents a host of challenging legal issues as traditional legal doctrines are applied to new technologies and business models. Companies, courts, policymakers, and other stakeholders must grapple with complex and fascinating questions — including how intellectual property, antitrust, contract, and tort law should apply in the Internet economy — and such issues present ideal opportunities for policy advocates to hone and apply their craft. This seminar therefore offers a unique opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of policy advocacy while exploring cutting-edge legal and policy questions.
