Description
This is a one-credit seminar, consisting of 9 classes, to be taken in conjunction with a field placement in a court, government agency, or non-profit organization. Students in all types of field placements are welcome. General learning outcomes and assessment methods for all WCL externship seminars are available at https://www.wcl.american.edu/externship/seminars.cfm. This course is designed to explore the practice of law, and how to transition from the classroom to the government workplace. Each class will address a major topic including, but not limited to, attorney advising, ethics, client management, professionalism, making presentations, effective communication. This seminar will explore these topics in the context of trials, administrative hearings, and attorney advising, with a focus on government agencies and organizations. The class will consist of a combination of lecture and class discussion, with emphasis being placed on class discussion.

Short reading assignments will be provided at the end of every class and will include articles, excerpts from books, etc.
