Description

This seminar on Trade and Environment (T&E) will examine the points of contact between these two areas of international law. It will examine the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement mechanism, explain why it attracts environment-related cases, and explore how the WTO has approached and resolved trade and environment disputes. The seminar will also cover key areas in the interface between trade and environment, such as technical standards, ecolabeling and harmonization; sanitary measures and food safety; and subsidies and natural resources. The seminar will host a brief discussion on investment law and arbitration and how that growing field is interacting with environmental issues. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of topical issues: current debates over trade issues in multilateral environmental agreements, T&E in regional trade agreements, and climate change and trade.
