Description

With the Latino vote having played such a decisive role in the outcome of the Presidential election, immigration reform has catapulted back to the top of the national policy agenda. Alliances of Senators are drafting now, and the reform debate will begin to unfold over the course of the spring semester. At the center of this debate will be questions of immigration enforcement. What to do with those already here unlawfully? What changes are needed to the immigration agencies' enforcement powers and policies? This course will examine these and a host of related issues as the debate unfolds. In addition, we will examine the President's controversial announcement last summer not to enforce deportation of "the Dreamers," those brought here unlawfully as children, and the tension between the parties over this remarkable use of prosecutorial discretion. We also will examine the Supreme Court's most important immigration decision in years, issued last summer, over the relationship between the federal authority and the powers of the state in immigration enforcement matters. We will have a number of guest speakers, including from Capitol Hill ,the Administration, the advocacy community.
