Description

This upper-level course focuses on selected topics in family law from both theoretical and policy perspectives, with an emphasis on race, class, and sexual orientation. We will examine family law issues that have a constitutional or federal law dimension. Topics include legal responses to changing family structures, alternative methods of reproduction, the legacy of slavery, regulation of intimate human relationships, interstate child custody and support, family leave, and reproductive rights. We will examine the policies behind current guiding principles of family law with an emphasis on feminist theory. The seminar will have a take-home final exam and does not fulfill the upper-level writing requirement. Family Law is not a prerequisite for this course.
