Description

This class will provide an overview of health care reform (national and state), coverage benefits and payment issues, the legislative and regulatory processes governing the U.S. health care system, the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) and prescription drug benefit, employer-sponsored health care, the problem of the uninsured, the medical malpractice insurance crisis, federal ERISA law and state regulation of insurance, HIPAA and patient privacy protections, health care reform proposals (past and present), advances in biotechnology, end-of-life, genetics, and other recent developments in health care policy. The required paper is worth 70% of your grade and meets the upper level writing requirement. The school expects a 30-page, double spaced, minimum length paper, exclusive of endnotes. You must use endnotes. Your paper must use Times New Roman type, 12 point font, with no more than 1” margins on all sides. Suggested topics will be provided. Papers are due on the last day of classes. The remaining 30% of your grade will be based on in-class participation, including presentations of your papers during the last class. Your attendance is required and expected at every class meeting.
