Description
This course provides a broad introduction to Chinese Law, Legal reform and current Legal System of P.R. China. The course will cover Legal development from the establishment of P.R. China through the Culture Revolution and the rule of law in P.R. China since 1978.The specific areas of this course will include constitutional reform, legal structure, law making institutions and processes, the courts, legal profession, basic principles of civil and criminal procedure and administrative litigation, basic principles of civil, commercial, criminal and administrative law, and the impact of globalization on Chinese legal developments. This course provides a basic Legal “literacy” of contemporary China, defined loosely as Chinese society since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The nature and orientation of the course are interdisciplinary, incorporating readings in Law, sociology, and political science. The aim is to demystify China, to make it accessible to you, and to give you the basic tools and motivation to pursue further engagement with China.
