Description

This course examines how debt financing can help communities domestically and abroad to develop. The course covers a range of specific topics through which students explore ethical questions surrounding the relationship between finance and human or environmental objectives, including: privatization, project finance, debt servitude, microfinance, and worker remittances as a development tool. This course considers environmental implications of project financing in which natural resources are collateral, and issues of gender and cultural difference in the context of loans intended to foster community development. The course examines theories of law and development and encourages students to assess how law can facilitate financing practices that provide opportunity and encourage human dignity in the context of economic development.
