The full name of this course is "Pandemic in Popular Culture: Science, Narrative, and Public Policy."

Description

Film, literature, and other forms of storytelling have direct impacts on how we view the world, what we understand and believe about the systems and spaces we live, and normative values. Narrative construction and interrogation are also at play in public policy and theory. This class investigates narrative in film, literature, and others forms of popular culture, and investigates how they may inform, correctly or incorrectly, public policy decision making in the context of pandemic disease. Students will be required to gain a working knowledge of film and literary theory and analysis, United States public health policy structures, and use the skills in conjunction with their knowledge of existing US legal and administrative systems. These tools will allow them to consider if and how popular culture informs the general population’s understanding of the law and policy institutions from many different perspectives, with an eye towards moving towards a better understanding of popular cultures impact on law, policy creation, and cultural norms.
