Description

I’m excited to examine contemporary laws, policies and practices that impact youth in the juvenile and adult justice systems with you this semester. We will explore present-day issues and systemic deficiencies, laws and practices that have significant bearing on youth and families, and attorneys and advocates, as they protect and defend the rights of children in juvenile and criminal courts across America. Topics will cover a range of legal issues looking at the juvenile justice system from arrest through post-disposition, and will also examine issues related to youth who are prosecuted in adult criminal courts. Students will discuss and examine a host of substantive and procedural due process and equal protection issues and will be encouraged to think about creative application. Whether in-person or online, this course will include readings, class or chat room discussions, and structured exercises and simulations. This course does not involve an end-of-the semester final examination but there will be a final written product based on a pre-approved topic and draft outline. Students will also be expected to argue the positions taken in their paper to the class.
