Description

Copyright law is one of the three main branches of intellectual property law, along with Patent and Trademark law. This course covers what works qualify for copyright protection, what the exclusive rights are, what the exceptions and limitations on those rights are, and what remedies for copyright infringement are available. Readings include foundational cases along with recent case law involving social media and new technologies. This course also teaches transferable skills in statutory interpretation because copyright is a mix of statutory provisions in the Copyright Act of 1976, as amended, along with substantial judge-made law that fills in gaps in the statute.
