Elder Law: Policy & Practice (LAW-812-001)
Unlikely to be offered in Fall 2018
The course will provide an introduction to the various legal issues and statutory regimes commonly involved in the legal practice of counseling and representing older persons and their representatives. It will include a survey of relevant Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security law. We will also explore common ethical questions in the practice area, capacity determinations and implications thereof, end of life healthcare decision making, and long-term care planning (both for services and finances). While the course will include lectures, there will be a strong emphasis on practical application of these skills and knowledge. To that end, each class will involve discussion and debate of real world examples. Grading will be based on class participation and the completion of a paper analyzing a current issue in elder law.
