Description

Leading & Counseling Nonprofit Organizations builds on your study of nonprofit law (from Law of Nonprofit Organizations) to deepen your understanding of nonprofit law through practical assignments. Do you want to start a nonprofit organization? Serve on a board or serve as general counsel in a nonprofit? This unique add-on course to Law of Nonprofit Organizations consists of weekly practical exercises designed to teach students the skills and practices useful for the representation and leadership of nonprofit organizations. Exercises include: drafting bylaws, drafting applications for tax exemption, developing key governance policies, evaluating business forms for commercial activities, evaluating political activities, and more. Additionally, there is an interdisciplinary exercise that involves meeting with students at the American University School of International Service social enterprise program to work collaboratively to resolve (simulated) legal issues arising in a new social enterprise. To take this course, you must co-register with Law of Nonprofit Organizations (LAW 852-001).
