Description

Immigration law is one of the fastest growing and most constantly evolving fields of law that exists today. But immigration lawyers are routinely criticized as providing poor quality and ethically challenged representation in immigration cases. This research seminar will take students through eight basic topics in immigration law and explain how and why working as a lawyer in these areas can create ethical challenges. The course will pay special attention to what it means to be a competent, zealous advocate in a world where a lawyer also has duty to protect the rule of law and to abide by the rules of ethics. Each class will begin with a 1- hour discussion of the basic legal framework that governs a particular immigration issue. The second hour of the class will consist of an examination and discussion of the ethical questions arising from the practice of law in that particular topic area and will provide guidance for handling ethical dilemmas that arise from practicing immigration law.
