Description

Following the heated debate in Congress on "fast track" authority to the Executive to negotiate international trade agreements, this course teaches students: the theory, negotiation and operation of international trade agreements, customs unions and economic unions, including ASEAN, the European Union, NAFTA, CAFTA, MERCOSUR, SACU and the major ones under negotiation such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The role and impact of these agreements on trade policy, industries and communities across the globe; the legal and political mechanisms involved. Analysis of agreement components including but not limited to market access for goods and services, dispute settlement, investment, labor, environment and other emerging issues. Provides practical trade agreements negotiations skills with full understanding of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements, their scope, applications and related jurisprudence. Students will acquire a better understanding of trade agreements and their important role as trade policy tools for governments, the private sector, civil society and global trade governance.
