Description
This seminar on Human Rights and the Environment (HR&Envt) will examine the points of contact between these two areas of international law. The seminar will explore how human rights law has been interpreted to address environmental issues, as well as how environmental law has begun to incorporate a rights-based approach. Particular attention will be given to the work of the special procedures of the UN Human Rights Council, particularly the work of the Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment. Emphasis will also be placed on the development of Human Rights and the Environment jurisprudence at the regional level. The seminar will also address topical issues in the field, such as extra-territorial obligations of States, the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development and corporate accountability. At the end of the seminar, students will be expected to be conversant with the key issues in the Human Rights and the Environment field, including normative theories and approaches, the landscape of institutions, the leading cases, and the cutting-edge issues in the road ahead.
