IMPORTANT: CLASS WILL MEET IN SMALL GROUPS FOR AN EXTRA HOUR EVERY OTHER WEEK from 7:50 - 8:50pm. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.

This is a three-credit, graded seminar taken in conjunction with a field placement. This course explores the lawyer-client relationship, the meaning of being a lawyer, and the many facets of the legal profession. This externship is appropriate for all types of externships. We will also include topics especially related to public-interest lawyering, access to justice, and social justice. We will explore thinking consciously about how to make decisions and how to help clients make decisions. We will explore the skills necessary to confront the ethical concerns that accompany lawyering in a variety of practice settings. The course will be shaped around the particular placements of those enrolled to encourage reflection on their experiences. The format of the class will be discussion-based and include journals, role-plays, presentations, and guest speakers.
