Description

This course examines the relationship between reproduction and the state. Beginning with an introduction to the reproduction related activities that framed much of socio-legal American discourse in the 20th century, students will then assess the utility of the critical legal theoretical frameworks used to examine the jurisprudence in this area. The ever changing doctrine and medical treatments and technology affecting reproductive interests and experiences, the course changes every year. The topics covered in past years include reproduction in American colonial era, reproductive practices during slavery, eugenics, family planning, abortion at all stages, poverty related reproductive policies and practices and advanced reproductive technologies. Students’ grades are based on their performance on an in class presentation and a research paper. Students wishing to satisfy the Upper Level Writing Requirement may do so provided they adhere to the rules set forth in the ULWR materials. The ULWR materials are available from the Registrar’s office and should accompany the ULRW “contract”.
