Description

This course will examine world-wide public health as both an economic imperative and a human right. The Millennium Development Goals were established by the WTO Doha Ministerial Declaration in 2001 to define public health objectives in the least developed nations – disease control, clean water, sanitation, a sustainable food supply. Maternal and child health, education and gender equality were other important objectives. The course is intended to give students an understanding of the roles played by major international organizations in the achievement of those goals in Sub Saharan Africa and elsewhere – the UN, WHO, UNESCO, WTO, World Bank, IMF, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and transnational corporations. In addition, the course will identify international and domestic laws that affect the achievement of those goals. We will study the Millennium Development Goals for public health in the least developed nations for several reasons. First, because they are a good example of man’s aspirations for healthier lives around the world. Second, because achievement of those goals is a test of the ability and inability of international organizations to fulfill such aspirations. And, third, because some commentators maintain that achievement of the Development Goals is essential to the political stability, economic growth and social well being, not only for the poorest nations, but all nations of the world. Illness, starvation, lack of water for drinking, sanitation and shrinking farm lands and over population put pressure on political and social structures that often crumble into civil wars and border conflicts over arable land and other natural resources.
