Please submit a brief (no more than 2 double-spaced pages, 12 point Times New Roman font) essay describing your interest in and commitment to criminal defense. Please also include whether you are a 2L or 3L. Although Evidence is not a pre-requisite for the course, please also indicate whether you have taken Evidence or whether you will be taking it in the Fall semester. Description
Taught through a combination of lecture, discussion, and simulation, the course is designed to teach the fundamentals of zealous, client-centered criminal defense advocacy. The first part of the semester will focus on the role of the criminal defense attorney, defense ethics, and selected legal issues in defense practice. The second part will focus on the application of defense theory and client-centered advocacy in the pretrial and trial context through simulated exercises, including the initial client interview, opening statements, direct examination, cross-examination, and closing arguments.
