Description

This research seminar explores topics related to law and lawyering in the U.S. movement for racial justice. After an introduction to the early civil rights movement offered by the Professor and based on her current research, students will shape the direction and content of the seminar based on their own research in progress. Students will meet one a week in class and once a week in smaller groups with the professor to discuss progress on their research papers. A final paper of 15-20 pages (or longer if meeting the upper-level writing requirement) will be due at the end of the semester, and there are also a number of intermediate projects related to writing the paper that will be due throughout the semester. Although the deadline schedule may seem (and is) somewhat demanding, it has proved very effective in the past in producing publishable – and often subsequently published -- papers. Any paper topic that fits within the general themes of the course can be pursued, subject to the approval of the Professor. (Narrower topics tend to work better than broader ones). Examination of original source materials, including abundant archival sources available in the Washington, D.C., area at the Library of Congress and other locations, will be strongly encouraged. Some suggested paper topic possibilities are listed at the end of this course description. This list is intended to be suggestive only; students are encouraged to pick topics of interest to them that span any era or topic related to the general themes of the course.
