Description

The majority of crimes prosecuted in the United States are prosecuted by local prosecutors. As the prosecutor advances in his/her career, most have set a goal to prosecute homicide cases. This course will take the student through an actual homicide case from the discovery of the victim up to and through prosecution of the co-defendants. The student will become familiar with the prosecutor's role pre-trial (including pre-arrest) in coordinating with police in the investigation of the crime. The student will prepare for various hearings, and will prepare and argue different pre-trial motions. The objective is to expose students to the day-to-day work that goes on in a local prosecutor's office. This course will be a combination of theory and practice. Students will read cases, statutes and articles defining the prosecutorial role and constitutionally required practices. There will be a high level of required class participation and various in-class exercises will be employed to contextualize the issues presented in the cases. The course will be fourteen (14) two (2) hour classes that build on each other and are designed to address the unique obligations of a state prosecutor.
