For a hotel guest, the visit is often a seamless series of selecting the hotel, making a reservation, checking-in and staying at the property, then paying for the stay. In fact, the hotel industry, in its current evolution, is an intricate series of parties acting in concert and pursuant to law and legal agreements: (i) hotel properties are developed, designed, and built by a real estate developer; (ii) the hotel company creates brands and operating standards, customer loyalty programs, and sophisticated reservations systems; and (iii) management companies, often third parties, operate the hotel.

Description

At the core of the Hospitality & Tourism Law Program, Introduction to Hotel Law traces the economic models of the industry, along with explanations of the terminology and current industry relationships. We then look at the common agreements in place for types of the hotels, followed with in-depth reviews of common provisions that often define these relationships. During the course, we investigate issues that are distinctive to the lodging industry while also examining important legal constructs that govern commercial relationships. Our material looks at topics in contract law, franchise agreements, intellectual property, data security, and dispute resolution.
