Students interested in registering for this course must submit a resume and a brief essay (1-2 pages) discussing their commitment to working as a public defender or criminal defense attorney. The essay should explain why they are interested in a career in criminal defense and whether they are a 2L, 3L or 4L. Although there are no prerequisites for the course, students should also note whether they have taken the basic Evidence course. Essays should be submitted to angelad@wcl.american.edu.
Description
Taught through a combination of lecture, discussion, and simulation, the course is designed to teach the fundamentals of zealous, client-centered criminal defense advocacy. The first part of the semester will focus on the role of the criminal defense attorney, defense ethics, and selected legal issues in defense practice. The second part will focus on the application of defense theory and client-centered advocacy in the pretrial and trial context through simulated exercises, including the initial client interview, opening statements, direct examination, cross-examination, and closing arguments.
