Description

This course will explore the fundamentals of zealous, client-centered criminal defense advocacy. The first part of the semester will focus on the role of the criminal defense attorney, selected legal issues in defense practice, and defense ethics. The second part will focus on the application of defense theory and client-centered advocacy in the pre-trial and trial context through simulated exercises, including the initial client interview, opening statements, cross-examination, and closing arguments. Enrollment is limited and by permission of the instructor only.

Interested students seeking permission to enroll must submit a brief essay (no more than one page double-spaced) describing their interest in criminal defense. Essays should be e-mailed to Professor Angela Davis at angelad@wcl.american.edu.
