Description

This course examines the regulation of commercial banks and bank holding companies, including their relationship to investment banks, broker dealers, insurance companies, and other financial enterprises. The course addresses: the evolution of regulation in the context of political/social considerations, civil and economic crises, and technological and other innovations (e.g., debt securitization and derivatives); the firewall between federally insured banks and other financial and non-financial institutions; the resolution of failed institutions including issues of systemic risk; the role and plight of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae; international coordination issues; and laws applicable to foreign banks operating in the United States and to U.S. banks operating abroad. Students may register for this seminar or Domestic Banking (LAW-724) but not both. Madden
