Description
In this course, we will examine the legal powers and duties of the state to ensure the conditions required for people to be healthy with specific consideration for civil rights, and economic and racial justice. We will study individual rights and structural constraints as limitations on the power of the state to act in furtherance of the common good with a focus on how these initiatives impact access to care for vulnerable populations. This course will include a mix of foundational and skills-based classes. For the foundation classes, we will analyze and discuss the legal structures, principles and issues that impact the delivery of healthcare in the United States. For the skills-based classes, the goal is to develop skills needed to effectively identify, analyze, describe, and advocate for a particular policy issue or objective. The course is intended to spark debate between different sides of these often controversial issues, and students will be asked to participate in different in-class role plays and debates.
