Description

This is a two-credit course that introduces students to the doctrine and theory of statutory interpretation in the modern regulatory state. Legislation is not a topic on the bar examination, but most of the work done by lawyers involves drafting, interpreting, or challenging statutes. Although special courses on statutory subjects (e.g., labor law, food and drug law, or secured transactions) may prepare students for dealing with special statutes, in the real world lawyers must deal with a range of laws (and a range of new laws) all the time. To prepare students to work with a variety of statutes you have not specifically studied is a critical goal of this course. The intention here is to help you learn generalizable skills that help in dealing with all types of statutes.
