Description

The proposed course will include instruction on the representation of entertainment, non-athlete "talent" (e.g., musicians, actors etc.) in commercial disputes (as opposed to agency representation). It is divided into five major segments:

Unique Issues in "Talent" Representation,

Breach of Contract,

Music Copyright,

Trademark,

Rights of Publicity.

There will be limited coverage of First Amendment issues as they relate to the main topics. The course objectives are to provide students with knowledge of: (i) the unique structure of the entertainment business, with emphasis on the music industry, and how this structure impacts legal representation, (ii) the basic substantive rights of "talent", (iii) how to litigate disputes involving "talent", and (iv) the practical aspects of representation of talent in commercial disputes. Students will be required to apply the legal and industry concepts to actual cases.
