Description
While this seminar focuses on Internet issues, the practical skills learned can be applied to any policy matter whether it’s national security, health policy, antitrust, tax, and more. Policy making skills, such as drafting talking points, creating a strategic legislative campaign, or learning the two minute elevator speech will help students pursuing a job anywhere from working at a law firm to working at the white house. In this class, students will learn legislative advocacy skills in the context of Internet policy issues. Using cutting edge Internet issues, such as cyber security, privacy, intellectual property, ecommerce, and more, students will have an opportunity to learn about Internet issues from a policy perspective and will not only gain substantive knowledge, but practical skills as well. Student outcomes will include an understanding of key Internet policy issues and acquiring “skills of the trade” for legislative advocacy: including persuasive advocacy for policy issues, formation of policy campaigns, legislative strategic planning, drafting of policy documents, and stakeholder politics. There is no prerequisite course required. Each class will incorporate an in class skill building exercise or prepare for a skill building assignment.
