Description

This course is an introduction to basic concepts in accounting, finance, economics, and related ethical issues that are essential knowledge for any lawyer, businessperson, or public administrator. The skills you learn in this class will benefit you in more advanced business law classes such as business associations, federal income taxation, health law, securities regulation, bankruptcy and commercial law, secured transactions, corporate finance, M&A, anti-trust, and in classes that draw on knowledge of valuation and finance (such as family law) or on statistical knowledge (such as the law of employment discrimination). The objective of the course is to deepen students’ comprehension of and appreciation for the financial tools necessary to make sound financial decisions. Understanding the critical underlying factors which affect a decision is necessary to adapting decisions to a changing environment. While the focus of the course will primarily be corporate decision making, the concepts and techniques covered can be applied to all financial decisions. For each of the following, the underlying intuition and fundamental analysis are the same: capital budgeting, capital structure alteration, working capital management, stock valuations, IPO valuations, corporate treasury decisions, advising on mergers and acquisitions and making personal investment decisions.
