Description

Computers and the Law teaches computer programming as a legal skill. Students will learn to code (no prior experience necessary) using the Python programming language, and write software geared towards assisting with legal practice. Examples of previous students' projects include programs that can analyze the text inside of PDFs, check government docketing systems for new filings, and generate documents from templates. In addition to programming lessons, there may be policy and doctrinal readings covering a wide range of legal technology topics. While there is no final exam, there will be programming homework and readings assigned up to once per week. Students who successfully complete the course will gain a practical skill that may improve their practice of law and make it more efficient, as well as an understanding of software from an implementer's perspective, which may aid in the legal analysis of emerging technology issues.
