Description
The course is designed to provide an introduction to the international climate change regime, its objectives, institutions, mechanisms and politics. The course will be divided into three main parts. The first will focus on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its related legal instruments, the Kyoto Protocol and most recently the Paris Agreement. We will unpack the history, governance arrangements, operation and future of each of these international agreements. The second part of the course will look at efforts to address climate change outside of the UNFCCC, including the role of non-state actors, coalitions and clubs. The last part of the course will examine how climate change interacts with other bodies of international law (e.g., the Ozone Treaty and Trade). We will conclude with an overview of climate law and policy in the United States and considering the role for law in the transition to a low-carbon future. At the end of the week you will have an understanding of the breadth of the international climate change regime as well as an appreciation of the key legal instruments and actors involved
