Description

Note: Meets 06/07-06/11 -- This course explores the impact of the globalization of intellectual property rules on access to medicines in developing countries. The course will include in-depth study of the patent chapter of the World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and the 2001 Doha Declaration on TRIPS and Public Health. The course will examine these rules through the lenses of international development economics and social movement politics to explore how international legal regimes are created, how they affect underdevelopment of the Third World and how strategies of resistance have grown in response. Cross listed with Health Law Summer Sessions.
