Description

Students will need to reserve 2 hours each week to attend this live online class in a quiet space where they can hear and speak with a headset. The class will meet at 6 pm EST. Enrollment and Attendance is MANDATORY for all students earning credit for corporate field placements. This two-credit class is designed to deliver law students the unique skills of successful in-house who work as team leaders for the benefit of their company’s executives and board of directors, agency general counsel and inspector generals. It focuses on leadership. teamwork, effective communication, preparing for each negotiation, organizing the company stakeholders to get to key strategic decisions, management of corporate compliance, and negotiation of joint ventures (when two companies’ cultures come together in an international setting). We will spend time together on-line weekly, and have several mock negotiations. During the last weeks of this course, teams of students will present on one of 12 topics, or can choose their own topic. Grades are based on turning in a thoughtful weekly journal about your externship, participating in class and in the presentations, and establishing (though not necessarily achieving) the goals the student sets for himself/herself for the externship. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: • Organize issues for negotiation and understand how in-house must lead a team of stakeholders; • Understand the importance of effective communication and economy of expression to groups • Understand the basics of corporate shareholder and board meetings • Understand corporate culture, ethics and leadership from the top • Understand corporate branding and intellectual property; overview of franchise and licensing • Understand when two corporate culture form joint ventures
