Description
This is a three-credit, graded seminar. It is taken in conjunction with a field placement in a non-profit, court, government organization, or a private law firm doing pro bono work. The overarching goal of the course is to provide a framework for you to reflect on and learn from your externship experience beyond the substantive legal work you will be engaged in—including what it means to be a “student lawyer” from the U.S. working with lawyers and clients in the legal system of another country and/or international organization, and the cultural, ethical, socio-legal, and, for some -- depending on the country of placement – the political dimensions of transnational lawyering. Developing the capacity to attain intercultural competency and reflect on and analyze your goals at this stage in your career will prove invaluable as you enter the profession after graduation. This seminar will meet: Wednesday, May 13th 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Thursday, May 14th 5:00pm-9:00pm. Friday, May 15th 9:00am-3:00pm. Monday, August 17th, 9:00am-5:00pm. Tuesday, August 18th, 12:00pm-6:00pm.
