IMPORTANT: This is a three credit graded class. Due to the condensed summer schedule the seminar meets for 2 hours and 50 minutes each week PLUS students meet with faculty in small groups for an extra half hour every week. The time/place of this extra meeting is determined by the professor. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.
Description
Leveraging Your Externship to Become the Happy Competent Lawyer You Want to Be. This seminar offers the opportunity to reflect on and learn from the externship experience. The seminar will explore skills students learn in their externships, including problem solving, planning, negotiating, identifying ethical challenges, and balancing zealous advocacy with professionalism and fairness. We will also focus on identifying and finding fulfilling legal careers, through information gathering, understanding and developing the skills and knowledge needed in for certain career paths, networking, and maintaining a balance between work and personal life. The seminar will include simulations and guest speakers. This is a three-credit, graded seminar. It is taken in conjunction with a field placement in a court, non-profit organization, government agency, or a private law firm doing pro bono work. You will be required to: (1) read the course materials; (2) submit weekly journals regarding your fieldwork experience; (3) participate in small-group meetings (for one hour every other week); (4) write three reflective essays; (5) make an individual or joint class presentation in the last few weeks of the semester; and (6) come prepared and participate fully in all seminar and small-group discussions.

ASSIGNMENT # 1: The following email was sent to all students registered for the class: Dear Students: I am looking forward to having you all in my seminar this summer. I have posted the assigned reading for the first class on the MyWCL course page. (Reflections and Journals by Professor Alex Scherr) Also, prior to May 21st please email me with your responses to the following questions and provide me with a copy of your current resume. 1) A copy of your current resume; 2) What issues do you feel you have no covered much in law school and that you would be interested in learning about/discussing in class; 3) What worries you most most about your externship; 4) What in your externship has you most enthusiastic? Feel free to keep this all very brief. One or two sentences on each question is sufficient (you can write more if you would like but you don’t need to).
