IMPORTANT: This is a three credit class. Due to the condensed summer schedule the seminar meets for 2 hours and 50 minutes each week PLUS students meet with faculty in small groups for an extra half hour every week. The time/place of this extra meeting is determined by the professor. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.

Description

This seminar is designed to help students succeed in their externship and legal career. Classes will include an examination of different types of legal practice, including government, private sector, non-profit, and non-traditional legal jobs. The seminar will also address ethical issues faced by externs and lawyers, and will examine the limits of zealous advocacy in light of professional responsibility rules. We will also discuss diversity in lawyering, including the ways in which implicit and unconscious bias influence choices and actions in all aspects of practice. This course will emphasize practical skills necessary to succeed as a lawyer. The class will include guest speakers and will provide students with the opportunity to role-play hypothetical situations that may arise during externships.
