Description

Externships provide an invaluable addition to legal education in the classroom. In this seminar, we will reflect on the wide variety of lessons that can be learned through the externship experience. We will evaluate different legal career paths and how to find the best fit for this phase of your career. We will consider the broad range of opportunities available to lawyers and the skills necessary to be successful in a variety of roles, including: written and oral advocacy, negotiations skills, time management, relationship building, ethics and professionalism in general. We will talk about how to hit the ground running and pitfalls to avoid as students embark on their career paths. This is a two credit, graded seminar taken along with field placement in a non-profit, court office, government organization, trade association or private law firm doing not for profit work. You will be required to read the course materials, regularly submit journals regarding your externship experience, write three reflective essays and prepare presentations for class, individually or in groups. You also must participate actively in classroom discussion. This seminar will include role playing, simulations, and guest speakers.
