Description

Externship seminars provide students with an opportunity to engage in critical reflection about the legal profession, their own future legal careers, and their priorities and values as lawyers in conjunction with their field placement experiences. As with other externship seminars, this course is designed to: (1) Assist you in getting the most out of your field placement experience; and (2) Learn about the realities of the practice of law through the lens of your externship experience and class discussions, and thereby build skills as a practicing lawyer. In addition, in this seminar we will place special emphasis on developing your skills as a “reflective lawyer” – by which we mean taking a proactive, self-aware, goal oriented, and principle-centered approach to managing your externship and career in general. We will discuss ways in which you can develop “meta-skills” to step back and engage in a process of deliberate reflection about your values, life, goals, career, and job. By learning to reflect on and think critically about your experience you will help ensure that you are, among other things: • Maximizing your ability to develop your lawyering skills as efficiently and effectively as possible; • Taking control of, and advancing, your career; • Achieving success in your chosen field/area; • Fully aware of and properly managing the realities of law practice, such as economics, business development, client management, workplace politics, and other factors beyond requisite lawyering skills that impact job and career success; • Detecting and navigating your way through problems and pitfalls to which lawyers can fall prey if they are not vigilant and guided by sound principles; • Integrating your personal values and life goals into your practice and career; and • Finding fulfillment and meaning in your work. We will discuss how to apply these meta-skills in specific contexts that arise in your field placements and beyond.
