We have our own website at http://internationalcourts.net/seminar where you will find the syllabus and all of our readings, research tips, etc.

Description

This seminar is an introduction to the practice of international courts and arbitral tribunals and their rôle in the development of international law. During the semester we will use lectures, case-studies, and class exercises as teaching methods to outline the evolution and structure of international tribunals, to examine the development of international legal principles by international tribunals using "sources" methodology, and to discuss issues concerning the effectiveness and future rôle of international courts in the development of international law.

Textbooks and Other Materials

The textbook information on this page was provided by the instructor. Students should use this information when considering purchases from the AU Campus Store or other vendors. Students may check to determine if books are currently available for purchase online.

Please do not buy any of the recommended books until after we meet for the first time. All are available on Reserve in the Law Library. All of the required readings will be available to you free online, so there need not spend any money on books for this class unless you really prefer to read things in paper.

First Class Readings

No required readings for the first class. If you haven't had international law, or feel a bit rusty on it, we recommend the first three chapters in Janis (Mark Janis, International Law, 6th ed., on Reserve at KZ 3140.J36 A35 2012).
