Description

We will begin with the economic and political conditions that led to the creation of the World Bank and IMF, examining the objectives of the global powers that created these institutions. We will learn about the evolution of the IMF and World Bank over the last 70 years, and think about the road ahead. We will describe the way they operate and the services they provide, and the role that law and lawyers play. We will refer to the current challenges facing the global financial system and to evolving theories of development and reform. We will visit the World Bank, IMF, and IADB and meet with lawyers working in these institutions. Finally, we will consider the prospects for these and other international financial organizations in the years ahead.

The course is intended to be highly interactive: students will be expected to participate, and to contribute their own ideas and perspectives. It will be helpful to bring your laptop or tablet to class.
