Description

The class is an introduction to French law and continental legal culture. Taught in French, the class prepares the students involved in the dual degree with University Paris X Nanterre and offers an opportunity to discover and apprehend the substance and the French legal culture for researchers and future lawyers involved in transactions with the French civil law world.

Throughout this course we will immerse in the French legal culture, its foundations, its sources, its institutions and its jurisdictions. The course also provides an introduction to French public law – constitutional law and administrative law – as well as an introduction to French private law. We will discuss the principles of the civil law, commercial law, contracts, torts, property law, labor law, criminal law, along with civil and penal procedures. Finally, we will explore the European Union law.

The course also focuses on legal vocabulary, French legal writing, reading and in-class conversation. French judgments are short and technical. During the semester, we will learn how to understand and analyze them.
